More car hire questions
I have been looking up the price of extra insurance cover for hire cars.
Super collision damage waiver ( SCDW) is around 15 euro pd, plus 300 euro for ' the amount of the own risk'
Sand & ash damage waiver (SADW) is 15 euros pd, 1,000 euros 'the amount of the own risk' ( ouch)
And gravel protection at 10 euros pd.
Are these prices normal rates, or can they be found a lot cheaper ?
Also, how likely is the risk of sand and ash damage to occur in July. I wouldn't hire a car without it, but I find the excess a little steep.
I'm still looking at 'Akureyrirentacar' has anyone used them.
1. Re: More car hire questions
As you probably know, there are insurance policies available (in the UK anyway) for a modest premium which refund excess payments to you should you damage the hire car.
The car hire firm will still charge you/deduct from your CC blocked amount, but that amount can be reclaimed on return home.
These policies also offer extra wider protection than the car hire ones, also covering underbody damage, tyres and glass which are usually excluded, irrespective of the high premiums charged over the counter.
Regarding sand and ash damage I'm not sure, as the re-insurance policies have a get out (naturally) where they will refuse a claim should local advice (i.e. there's likely to be corrosive substances in the wind) be ignored.
Have a look at moneymaxim.co.uk for terms and costs.

If you plan to drive the South Coast sand & ash is highly recommended.

A link on the Sand & Ash waiver, from the same site as Sam C mentioned earlier - https://www.moneymaxim.co.uk/news/car-hire-e…
And here's a blog by a local discussing when and why the S&A insurance would be most necessary: https://www.northbound.is/blog/111/do-i-need… - it's the best info I've seen on this subject.
And commenting on the car rental you ask about, I posted a reply on an earlier thread - https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g18995… - I'm sure you've seen it (I hope).Edited: yesterday, 23:35
