New York public transport

We are off to NYC at the end of the year (2 adults, 2 teenage boys) for the first time and would welcome advice on buying tickets for and using public transport.

We love cities and traveling everywhere by bus or tube is a huge part of our trips to London or Paris. We tend to make multiple journeys every day.

We are staying in Times Square.

On a regular computer (not the mobile app), look at the list of top questions on the right side of this page and find the "How Do I Ride the Subway" topic near the top of the list (about 6 down). That contains links to several good articles that will teach you everything you need to know.

Here is a direct link to one of the guides contained in those articles: http://www.nycsubwayguide.com/subway/ Pay special attention to the step-by-step tab

Then what's bet for you is the unlimited 7 day MetroCard for $33 each. This covers all NYC subways and regular city buses. If you are staying in NYC this is all you will need.

If you end up staying outside the city limits - as in NJ (which is not recommended if at all possible) then you will have to determine the best way (time and cost to get into NYC. This can end up being quite expensive and for 4 people the extra transit cost might well be better put towards a more expensive hotel in Manhattan.

“Can’t see the woods for the trees” comes to mind. I knew that question would have been asked many times, but I’ve never noticed the ‘top questions’ list in all the times I’ve used the forums.

Thank you.

I can verify that the article Christnp has linked was an absolute lifesaver for our trip in October!

Not sure how long you are staying but we were there 4 nights and definitely got our money's worth from the 7 day unlimited pass and I'm purchasing it again for the trip my son and I are taking next weekend.

Unlimited metro card is your best bet. It is good to use for the subway and the buses.

The 7 Day Unlimited is good value if you're staying for at least 3-4 days. It's better value than the pay-per-ride card if you plan on at least 13 subway or bus rides. But for the convenience, no matter how long you're staying, it's priceless.
